La Perouse/Maroubra
$575,000 has been approved to the La Perouse/Maroubra community for a range of crime prevention and community development strategies over three years from 2002 to 2005.
All of the initiatives funded in the La Perouse/Maroubra community have been identified through working with the local community.
Community organisations, Local Government and State Government agencies worked to together to find solutions to priority issues affecting the La Perouse/Maroubra community. The government met with community organisations, government service agencies in early 2003 to identify priority issues that needed to be addressed and to agree on initiatives that would assist to solve those issues.
The initiatives will address these issues identified by the community:
- High crime levels
- Social disadvantage
- School attendance and retention
- Improved coordination of government services
The initiatives that will support crime prevention and community development in La Perouse/Maroubra are:
- $174,000 to introduce new and expanded programs to improve school attendance and retention rates by targeting truancy, school absenteeism, young people at risk of suspension and failing to engage in school learning, and supporting the transition of at risk young people from primary to high school. Programs to be developed and implementation facilitated by employment of one temporary full time teacher and a temporary teacher.
- $201,000 to establish an after-school youth outreach program in Lexington Place, directed towards at risk youth who presently cause fear and disorder in public places, and are believed responsible for a range of crimes including malicious damage, theft and low level drug activities.
- $170,000 to establish an integrated case management response to significantly improve the assistance provided to families with multiple and complex needs, who currently interact with various government and community agencies on a regular basis. It is proposed to progressively build up the response to a workload of about 30 families.
- $30,000 to contribute to the purchase of a 12 seater bus for the Maroubra PCYC to enable it to expand its outreach capabilities, transport youth to and from the Club, and to support the Lexington Place outreach program.
