As a mother of a six year old boy with Dyslexia it breaks my heart to see that this thread has been going for four years and we are all still crying out for help. Thank you to those that have contributed contact information for different programs. All I can do is start at the top and work my way through. Hopefully I will find something that will help.

It helps to know that so many other mothers are out there dealing with the same frustrations, but it's terrible that we have to go through this.

I want to share with you a term coined by Jenny McCarthy that I recite to myself every time I hit a wall - "Mother Warriors". Please remember it when you are faced with people who try to make you wrong. You are ALWAYS right when you are fighting for your child!

Good Luck!

Hi,Your story sounds a bit like mine, except I am a kinship carer for 2 Grandchildren every 2nd weekend, they r in foster care with a family. I do not get on with foster family, and they make my life hell...
The kids aged 7 years & 6 years, they have been in foster care for 5 years.
The 6 year old is not my maternal grandchild but she has no one else and is my grandsons 1/2 sister, for the 1st years of my grandsons life I had to fight the mother to see him, the when they were taken into care same thing again with dept.of child safety and now after a long battle, getting blue cards doing courses I have grief with the foster family. thank you anyone reading this...... I live in Queensland and find there is no one and no where to go to ask questions
and to fully trust the people you are talking with.....

Based on a UK concept, Social Innovation Camp (SI Camp) Australia is a program to use the Internet and ideas from the public to help improve the world or specific communities.

The program begins with a public call for ideas that use web-based capabilities to respond to social needs through a series of idea generation ‘meetups’ in various locations around Australia, including a meetup in Wollongong on Tuesday 27th October. Ideas received so far have included:

* A Website to help connect disadvantaged people find opportunities for work experience
* A 'crowdsourcing' Website to help design the Australian city of the future
* An online tracking system for consumer reporting of adverse psychiatric drug reactions
* A virtual community 'tool shed' for geographic communities to lend and borrow consumer durables such as lawnmowers, power tools, custom kitchen appliances etc

Based on the idea of someone with living with Multiple Sclerosis, the UK SI Camp process created http://enabledbydesign.org/blog/about.html

Six to eight great ideas will be selected to participate in an intensive workshop in Sydney over the weekend of 5th-7th March 2010, where Web developers will help build Website prototypes, business leaders will help with enterprise planning and funding advice.

The Wollongong meetup is taking pace on Tuesday 27th October and people interested in attending can register online at http://www.sicampaustralia.org

Note: Other meetups have already taken place in Sydney (and elsewhere around the country) but this is the first regional SI Camp meetup.

Thanks,

James

Perth Clinical Psychologist Christopher Semmens will present a two day training workshop in Thought Field Therapy (TFT) for mental health care professionals at the Sancta Sophia College in Sydney on November 2nd and 3rd 2009.

Application is pending for 13 APS professional development points.

The workshop, entitled "How psychologists can use Thought Field Therapy (TFT) to significantly enhance efficiency and effectiveness" is a two day interactive and includes all materials and catering.

This workshop traces the history of psychotherapy,
the developments that led to Dr. Roger Callahan’s discoveries
and elaborations, and the theory that Callahan
constructed about TFT’s mechanisms.

Targeted techniques for dealing with a broad range of
emotional problems including anxiety, fear, addictive
behaviours, traumatic stress, grief and loss, anger
and guilt will be covered in detail.

Ways of incorporating TFT into your current models of
working will be considered. The practicalities of
dealing with complex and difficult cases and the
nuances of clinical assessment and therapy delivery
are important areas to be covered in the workshop.

There will be numerous live demonstrations of the
techniques and ample opportunity for supervised
practice of the various skills as they are introduced.
Issues of traumatic stress and the psychosomatic
process in psychotherapy will receive detailed
consideration.

Have you considered setting up a hosted phpbb.com forum?

They're not that hard to setup and I think many webhosts actually have cpanel type of things where you can install them with one or two clicks.

The suggestion to use ning.com is a good one. They have quite a nice platform and it's hosted by them so overall a pretty good deal.

As with any of the options above, including the yahoo groups (which is also a fine platform)...you'll definitely want to moderate it to keep the sp4m bots off.

Hi Sara,
You can recognise the Donation In Kind in your accounts be creating a General Journal Entry:
Dr Expense that has been donated
Cr Income account called Donations In Kind
For example, if your generous volunteer donated their $200 airfare to attend one of your organisation's events you would:
Dr Travel Expenses
Cr Donations In Kind
The donor (in this case the volunteer) can in some circumstances get a tax deductible receipt. However there are lots of rules for this. Refer to the "Gift Pack" at ato.gov.au

But I believe volunteer out of pocket expenses contributions should be considered as in-kind donations. And also number of volunteer work hours should also be calculated as in-kind donations.
Hi Merarth,

Thanks for the opportunity; I am part of a multicultural organisation that runs a lot of projects. Different community runs their own program under the umbrella of the organisation and we are auspice by Riverwood Community Centre. We united on annual various celebrations, forums, and group program. We are also link to one another across Canterbury Local Council. There are 156 voices united to one powerful voice. We are very lucky what we do are supported and sponsored by Canterbury Council, HOUSING NSW and others.

We do many forums and celebrate annual events where we invite the community leaders, government and non government representatives, stakeholders, service providers, parents, schools and senior citizens to participate. We believe in making them aware of the needs of the community and what we wanted from the service they provide. In this way they come to realise that these are the needs and the gaps that they have to address and action to get results. They have to provide those needs and that is the solution. Each community and schools perform at our events. We share the enjoyment, excitement and it is very educational, entertaining and it promotes understanding of the different culture and it brings peace and harmony. It connected us to all the community and it save time, share knowledge and most of all the right connections who where for the right contacts instead of going round and round like it is ongoing.

We always attracted over 500 hundred people in our celebrations and over one hundred people when we have forums. We selected the venue very carefully, a venue to be easily accessed by the guests close by public transport, the catering, organise interpreters, we send out invitation letters with the Agendas to all our members, we targeted people in social housing, we targeted children and parents, agencies, and the lists will go on. Each area a person is in charge and to make sure that their areas are well informed and will be the contact person.

With our forums, events we have a steering committee and we pick topics and do a research asking our members to pick topics that interest them on services that they felt there is a need which is affecting their everyday life. These were the topics that the majority wanted. We then find speakers to do talks on the services they provide.

Our oganisation will be running a forum on the 29th of October at Burwood RSL. We have picked 5 topics, so we are inviting Law Access & Legal Aid, Age Care, Housing NSW, The police, Mental Health. From past experiences the community and our members will attend and will participate if the topics are any interest or will benefit them. These topics were selected after consultations, with members and finalised by the steering committee. We are looking forward to this day.

On the day of the forum or any celebration the steering committee members are allocated with roles to make sure that the day runs smoothly. Two people take care of each role. The registrations are very important, so two people are allocated to this role to welcome the guests and after signing the attendance book they show them their seats and gave them the agenda. We felt that this role is very important. Some guests will get lost if not welcome. We also advertised on our local paper, local radio, word of mouth, and organised transport to bring people from Inner West, St George, Sutherland and Eastern Suburbs and not forgetting our local Canterbury areas.

Depending on the audience. It's very important to invite grass roots specialists in their capacity to talk and represented the professional body they belong to and represented their community (organisations) involved - for instance an indigenous lawyer from law access or a Arabic Director of Nursing, or a Chinese doctor who can converse, speak and understand the audiences especially when it is time for questions. Our organisation is for the general community but 90% multicultural. We are lucky in Australia that most professionals are born in Australia and can speak other languages as well.

This professional service is integral to the work of the whole Community with all experts and experienced in areas like doctors, counsellors, teachers, lawyers, trained nurse, community and Welfare Workers. Key issues that these service providers and workers who deal with the whole community in need. These are the areas of education, health, legal, child protection, early intervention, youth suicide prevention, needs of the aged, mental health, homeless and domestic violence.

Special attention and all been urged for all service providers to better understand Indigenous' tradition and culture when dealing with their issues. I encourage and believe that understanding Indigenous Aboriginal, Pacific Islanders and others culture will help service providers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, counsellors, authorities provide better treatment and diagnose right medicine, cure to indigenous aboriginal, Pacific Islanders and other Australians to get better outcome. To provide right services, right cure and to take prevention and to the target to get results.

Every forum should be encouraged to clearly define roles within the agency, service providers, non-profit organisation including the responsibilities and accountabilities of each role Implements evaluation and feedback mechanisms to ensure continual improvement of service and to hit the target that it aims for.

Hello Bridget

I have previously worked as a Disability Liaison Officer at a South Australian University. One of the resources that was very useful for people with dyslexia in the University setting was 'TextHelp Read and Write Gold'. It is a software program that can be tailored to assist people to overcome the effects of their dyslexia, as dyslexia has a different impact for every person. For example, it may highlight text as the person reads, or it may highlight and provide a voice output of the text (read the text to the person). It has many features, both for reading and for writing.

For more information I recommend you contact Spectronics. Spectronics is an organisation that provides training and support for people who use adaptive software. It is staffed by professionals who specialise in working with people with learning disabilities (special educators etc). I cannot recommend them highly enough to you. Their website is: www.spectronicsinoz.com/

I have found their staff very friendly, approachable and helpful.

I have assisted many students with Specific Learning Disabilities to overcome the effects of their disability through providing adaptive technology to meet their support needs in the University environment.

There is adaptive technology available for children to use in the school environment, it is not my area of experience though. I am sure Spectronics will be able to assist you.

All the best

I wonder if anyone can help...........

I am working as a Research Assistant on an important new research project on Age Discrimination in Employment - a study being done by two senior academics (University of NSW and UWS) in conjunction with the Human Rights Commission and, a Sydney law firm, on behalf of the National Seniors Association.

I am trying to find and interview people over 45 (either sex) who feel they have suffered age discrimination in employment - whether or not they have taken the matter further, or whether or not they believe they can prove it!

I wondered whether anyone might have, or know someone who has, experienced this? If so, I would be very grateful if they could contact me (mariastf@googlemail.com) so I can arrange an interview. Alternatively you might prefer just to write a comment or note in this discussion forum about your experiences.

All information will be kept confidential, as will the identity of the individual and the organisations.

What we are really loooking for at this stage are some "stories" to get an idea of what happens out there in the real world.

If people are able to help at all I would be very grateful, as it is proving hard to find people who are willing to speak about this.

I look forward to hearing from all of you - Maria
