OverviewThe Drugs and Community Action Strategy (DCAS) New England/North West region has 13 local government areas including; Armidale Dumaresq, Glen Innes-Severn, Gunnedah, Guyra, Gwydir, Inverell, Liverpool Plains, Moree Plains, Narrabri, Tamworth Regional, Tenterfield, Uralla and Walcha. The New England/North West region covers a geographic area of approximately 106,280 square kilometres, with a population of approximately 180,000. Areas range from rural and remote in the west, to a rural industrial city of 50,000 people, and many small towns and villages with a population of less than 200. The region also has a much higher proportion of indigenous people than the state average (5.8 percent in comparison to 1.7 percent statewide). There are currently seven Community Drug Action Teams (CDATs) in the New England/North West region including Armidale, Gwydir, Inverell, Moree, Narrabri, Tamworth and Tenterfield. CDATs in this region are particularly focussed on youth and Aboriginal issues.
