Be a Community Builder

This module is divided into four topics: Each topic provides practical resources, case studies and related reading. Here we look at what community building involves and why it's important to encourage and support community participation.

What is community building?

This module introduces community building and related concepts. There are checklists and background reading on community building and related concepts such as community development, social capital, civil society and sustainable communities.

Volunteering

How to recruit and support volunteers?

This topic provides toolkits, manuals, guides and other resources for volunteers and organisations.

Many inspiring stories of their success are shared here.

Further useful information can be found in Community Leaders and Community Participation.

Community leaders

"To me leadership is something that is perceived about you by others. Most of the achievers or leaders that I have worked with over the past five years don't always fit the stereotype and would never label themselves as being leaders. I don't think of myself as a leader, though a lot of others say I am." Vikki Dickman, Chinchilla, (winner Australian National Young Achievers Award year?)

This topic looks at the qualities of community leaders and provides resources to support community leaders, as well as information on training programs and stories of the achievements of community leaders.

Community participation

Here we look at why community participation and becoming involved in managing local community organisations, government boards or local councils is important. This topic provides information on programs and practical resources to encourage and support participation.
